PLC Programming & Industrial Automation

Exam 1122

Programmable Logic Controller programming utilizing Siemens TIA Portal (S7-1200/1500) and Allen-Bradley RSLogix 5000.

Course overview

Industrial automation is the one discipline here where the work cannot be simulated away — a PLC programme that looks correct on screen still has to drive a contactor that is wired a particular way. The course is built around bench work on real Siemens S7-1200 and Allen-Bradley hardware, with simulation used only for practice between sessions. It starts at the electrical level, because most automation faults are wiring and sensor faults rather than logic faults, and moves through ladder logic to structured control, HMI integration and industrial networking.

Skills you'll gain

  • Read and produce electrical control schematics and I/O lists
  • Wire and verify digital and analogue field devices to a PLC
  • Write, download and monitor ladder logic in TIA Portal and RSLogix 5000
  • Use timers, counters, comparison and math instructions correctly
  • Structure programmes with function blocks and reusable routines
  • Scale analogue inputs and implement basic PID control
  • Build a simple HMI and link it to controller tags
  • Commission and fault-find a working control panel

Learning outcomes

  1. 01Take a written sequence of operations and turn it into working, documented ladder logic
  2. 02Trace a fault from symptom to cause across wiring, sensor, tag and logic
  3. 03Convert between Siemens and Allen-Bradley conventions without relearning from scratch
  4. 04Scale a 4–20 mA transmitter to engineering units and prove it against a reference
  5. 05Build an operator interface that a non-engineer can actually run a machine from
  6. 06Hand over a panel with drawings, tag list and programme documentation

Frequently asked

Is this course available online?

No, and deliberately so. Roughly half the learning is wiring, measuring and fault-finding on real hardware. A simulator-only version would be a different, weaker course, so we do not offer one.

Do I need an electrical background?

You need to be comfortable with basic electrical concepts and able to read a wiring diagram. A DAE in Electrical, or equivalent trade experience, is the typical starting point.

Siemens or Allen-Bradley — which is more useful here?

Both. Siemens dominates in textiles, packaging and much of the local manufacturing base; Allen-Bradley appears more in multinational plants and in the Gulf. The course covers both because engineers move between them.

Will I be able to programme a full machine afterwards?

You will be able to programme and commission a machine of moderate complexity from a written sequence of operations. Large process plants and safety-rated systems require further specialisation.
